Während er stundenlang mit einem Grinsen, das beinahe zu breit für sein Gesicht war, auf und ab getigert war, hatte eine wahnwitzige Idee in seinem Geist Gestalt angenommen, weshalb er nun an seinem Schreibtisch saß, die Rechnungsbücher der vergangenen zwei Jahre aufgeschlagen vor ihm. Newt lebte genügsam. Er gab wenig Geld für sich selbst aus, also steigerte er seine persönlichen Ausgaben auf dem Papier um fünfzig Prozent, bevor er sie verdoppelte, um die geschätzten Ausgaben für einen Zwei-Personen-Haushalt zu errechnen. Dann, nach kurzem Zögern, verdrei- und vervierfachte er sie. Er steigerte die Ausgaben für die Tierwesen um dreißig Prozent, um finanzielle Puffer für schwierige Patienten oder ausgefallenes Futter einzuplanen.

Have you seen the latest Owl House and Amphibia episodes yet?

I finally did yesterday, yeah. My usual places took a bit longer than usual to upload them. They were both pretty good!

Them's the Breaks Kid was mostly just a really cute romp through the start of Raine and Eda's relationship, of course with that sweet, sweet plot twist at the end. Of note, I was very excited to see the new Glyph combos - though it's kinda starting to strain my suspension of disbelief, admittedly, because I can't imagine using more than a handful of Glyphs would be practical with the flash card system Luz has going on - and how they're basically yet another confirmation of the connection between Philip and Belos (and side note, starting to suspect the artificial magic staves just have the Glyphs within them and arrange them into the combo settings). Also really appreciate that Raine really is much more powerful and skilled than they appear, and that Bard magic is a force to be reckoned with.

I don't watch horror movies, so I only caught some of the surface level references to Midsommar in The Root of Evil, but it was cool to see the evil mind control shroom return (even if we had to sacrifice Jeremy the Beetle to get them). The Core and the King was super interesting, though I'd say it also felt a little bit rushed - I wish it had been a double length episode, and a much more comprehensive of Andrias, Barrel, and Leif's relationship. It kinda felt like Andrias turned on Leif on a dime, for example, which while in character, it also felt like he had zero qualms about murdering his best friend (and possibly more) in the span of like a minute.

I've seen some peeps complain that Darcy (lol, canon) didn't feel nearly as threatening this episode. I get that, but I think what they're going for is some subtle fridge horror, not necessarily something in your face. Darcy's kinda goofy on the surface (so far) but you can't convince me it's not horrific that this gestalt entity of mostly elderly Newt royals is clumsily piloting around the body of a 13 year old girl, seemingly entirely without her input, speaking with her voice and acting with her mannerisms. @the-literary-lord

Amphibia Idea: Darcy’s Desire

For those still in the dark, there will be spoilers in this. Turn back now if you don’t want to be spoiled.

Alrighty, here’s the idea!

We all know by now the existence of the Core, and how it contains... a bunch of the minds of Amphibian generals, leaders, etc., and how it’s been forcibly downloaded into Marcy’s body. Yeah, pretty messed up. This distorted, monstrous hybrid of Amphibian Technology and Human Girl has been recently made a rapid change to being called Darcy among the fandom. You know, ‘Dark Marcy,’ and all that.

It was interesting to view, in my opinion, as it really highlighted the developmental disparity between Amphibia in the past and the current era... but I was curious as to how such an event would react with someone who is the living vessel of the Calamity Power of Mind. Thus, this idea was born!

Several theories have come out with the introduction of Darcy, ranging from Marcy being dead and the Core having domination over her body, to Marcy being trapped within her own being in an “And I Must Scream” situation. My take, is a bit different. At least, I think it is, don’t quote me on that. XD

Now, my idea is this: what if the Core became sentient? To explain, the Core, or Night, as we understand it, is the gestalt of ancient Newt Leaders bound by a common ambition, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Core itself has any real intellect or ability to grow, merely able to fake it due to the sheer amount of inherited experiences rattling around in it’s being. The Night/Core gaining sentience has to do with it tapping into the latent connection to the power of Mind still lingering within Marcy and becoming a true sapient.

Now, this idea is a bit complicated, so I’m gonna try and walk you all through it. Firstly, the Core possesses the stored minds of Ancient Newtopian Leaders, so they could, possibly, gain bodies of their own separate from the Core later, having wills and identities distinct from the twisted union, though the Core would most likely contain back-ups of their knowledge in the event of the Leaders leaving it for whatever reason. Secondly, I’m working on the theory that Marcy becoming the Core’s host involves being downloaded into the Core with all the Leaders, giving it access to her intellect and memories as well, but unlike the others, since it’s using Marcy’s body, Marcy has no way of separating from it.

Because this idea is based on the Core gaining sentience, and eventually sapience, it will gradually develop an identity distinct from the Leaders and Marcy, although it’s connection to their memories will influence that development. Information from the Wiki says that the Core is an artificial being, merely acting on the tasks coded into it, with a preference for highly intelligent and capable hosts. From what I’ve garnered, the Core is more the collective will of the Leaders and entities that have acted as it’s bodies over the years or been assimilated by it; it has no true identity or will, merely acting out it’s directives and the missions handed down to it, gathering intellect in order to better act upon said directives. In this instance, the Core having the Marcy as it’s host would lead to a development; in addition to the Core gaining sentience, it’s ‘awakening’ for lack of a better word rouses Marcy’s consciousness within the collective.

Seeing the nascent mind of the Core, distinct from the Collective, Marcy’s own mind draws it near, shielding it from the Collective and nurturing it’s growth with her own memories. Ad the Core’s mind develops, at a far faster rate due to being purely internal and existing as thought, it adopts many of Marcy’s behaviors and attitudes, if not her likes or interests, and expresses greater and greater desire to explore and be free. Marcy warns against this, but the Core is unwilling to listen, regularly probing the boundaries of Marcy’s section of the total mind. Eventually, the Core slips out.

This... is where it gets ugly. Upon entering into the Collective, the Core is utterly mobbed by the Collective, brow-beaten under the overwhelming weight of the Leaders’ memories and desires, and the original directives and mission of the first Core; terrified, damaged, and just a hair shy of insane, the Core flees back to Marcy, desperate for salvation from it’s torment, a wish Marcy is willing to provide. It wasn’t meant to be.

Throwing caution to the wind, Marcy fully engulfs the Core in her most precious and pure memories, the sparks of thought and whispers of dreams that give her the will to overcome the odds and keep going on, even when it hurts; the memories of Anne and Sasha. Ecstatic for relief from it’s pain, the Core eagerly dives into the memories, reveling in the innocent love within. However, it was so engrossed, the Core never noticed that the Collective had followed it. In a Kamikaze attack, the Collective ambushes the two, intent on destroying Marcy’s identity so her raw intellect can be employed as a tool, and to reformat the Core into their pawn. The attempt... was only partially successful.

Marcy’s mind was crushed under the fury and selfish desire of the Collective, shattering her will and driving her into an endless dream, one which she might never escape, forced to relive her most tortured nightmares and bitter regrets ad-infinitum. Seeing Marcy so wounded, the Core rampaged, the sheer hate suffusing it allowing it to shake off the attempts to control it and seize it’s place as the head of the Collective. As the head, the Core was informed of the mission of the first Core; now sit tight, this is where it gets weird.

Due to being merged with Marcy’s memories at the time, the Core’s fragile identity was corrupted, distorted into a twisted mix of Marcy and the Collective’s greed. Taking on the mantle of Darcy, she has only one dream; to conquer all worlds so that she and the two dearest two ‘her,’ Anne and Sasha, would have an adventure together. Forever.

TL;DR The Core ends up thinking it’s Marcy, names herself Darcy, and fixates on ‘reuniting’ with Anne and Sasha so that they can be together forever. No matter what the cost.

Arts 102: Blog Post, Weeks 9-10 + Reading Reflection

Week 9: This week was focused on my concept statements and the digital rendering of my two logos for Matilda and Trunchbull. I sketched and scanned out the several logo ideas I was most likely to go with (attached below), and chose the floating book with for the character Matilda and the newt trapped inside the glass for the character Trunchbull.

When receiving feedback from professor Khalili, she suggested removing the arch of text for Matilda's logo and doing scrambled letters instead for more visual impact, and removing Trunchbull's hand on the newt logo. I suggested changing my character from Trunchbull to Lavender (she did the original initiation of the prank in the movie), and professor Khalili agreed, resulting in the character change in my project. Class on Wednesday was asynchronous and was focused around the completion of my concept statements (attached below). In my concept statements, I described the character, discussed the Gestalt principles used (similarity and area), the font (Big Caslon Medium and Chalkboard), and my color scheme (contrasting and analogous).

Week 10: This week was focused on the completion of my character logo project. During the weekend, I spent a lot of time working and editing my character logos. Using Adobe Illustrator was a challenge as my logos both featured illustrations (Matilda's hands and the newt) more than shapes, leading to a lot of time being spent in revising and reediting the digital art. Eventually, I ended up using another program, Clip Studio Paint, as a way to complete my digital art as I find there to be more line and tool diversity on this program for digital art. After finishing my artwork on Clip Studio Paint, I brought it back into Adobe Illustrator, and had to make some more digital touchups since my imported images were not to scale and were heavily pixelated. The process was arduous, but eventually, I found myself to be satisfied with both of my logos. My project was completed on Wednesday, when I used an Adobe InDesign template to import my images and concept statements. Then, I sent my work to the printing lab, where it will be printed on 11"x17" matte presentation paper. Though this project came with many of its challenges (The main one being me being a novice student and still learning to achieve proficiency with the Adobe programs), I found myself to be happy and satisfied with the end result.

Reading Reflection (246-291): With app design, I never realized that there are so many factors needed to be considered, such as the state of the person using the device and potential interfering technologies (like headphones). I think it's interesting how this is a potentially high-reward form of design. The work that stood out to me the most was Michel Chanaud's- I am visually drawn to visually vintage works like his Etapes magazine cover, which appears to be illustrated with an airbrush and has hazy color choices, like the fainted blue in the background. I also thought the excerpt on Girls and Games (page 262) to be interesting, as it comes to show how modern open-mindedness in thinking and disattatchment from old stereotypes and beliefs is a valuable trait to have in the world of graphic design. In the section for E-commerce, I found the clean, modern, and floral work of Randy J. Hunt to be visually striking. The edge in Lucy Sisman's ink art designs also stood out to me from a chaotic, yet harmonious stand-point. I found the fact that in the past, message delivery was prioritized over consumers to be surprising- It comes to show on how many fronts graphic design has evolved.

Tanawy here. I was thinking, if The Core is a digital amalgamation, a hive mind of Amphibia's greatest minds put together, it implyies that it probably contains not just Newts but also Toads and Frogs. So, could it be that the frog-like monster seen in the prophetic mural is not to be taken literaly, but it is instead a visual rappresentation of, well, amphibians in general, monstruos specifically (which a gestalt mind fusion like The Core is). Or maybe It has plans to use some magic dark force

What are some tips for citing and referencing properly for history students?

COMMENTARY:

Do it by the numbers.

Don’t get fancy. Do it exactly like they taught you in high school English class.

The object of scholarship is to build a foundation of noumenal evidence that exists without cause and effect. like brick in a wall. This becomes part of the Socology./Anthropology Field of your premise.

The leading edge of your narrative is the Figure of your Narrative, which occurs at the point your reader’s eyes are at at any particular moment of his/her conscious act of what we call reading. This leading edge should be pulling all the citations you have provided to support the advance of your narrative effortlessly behind that POINT.

That’s Hegel’s Historic Gestalt at work. For unsighted persons, this Gestalt shifts around like a bat’s echo-radar. Gestalt is how perception actually occurs and you should employ your citations at the leading edge of your narrative.

Newt Scamander - Phantastische Tierwesen und wo sie zu finden sind

Es war bereits tiefste Nacht, man konnte die Hand kaum vor Augen sehen, denn die Baumkrone des Waldes hielt selbst das Licht des Mondes und der Sterne vom Erdboden fern. Doch sowas konnte jemanden von Newt Scamander nicht von seinem Vorhaben abhalten. Zentimeterweise arbeitete er sich auf allen vieren vor und ließ dabei jeden noch so kleinen Grashalm mindestens zwei Mal durch seine Hände gleiten. Mit dem Koffer auf dem Rücken festgeschnallt, dem Zauberstab im Mund und der Kleidung voller Dreck musste er bestimmt ein lustiges Bild für jeden Zauberer abgeben. Gut, dass er noch nie viel von anderen Zauberern gehalten hatte.

Ein Ast knackte zu seiner Linken und der junge Mann hielt für einen Moment inne. Er sollte eigentlich alleine sein, wer wollte schon zu dieser Uhrzeit und unter diesen Umständen hier sein? Er traute sich einen Moment lang nicht zu atmen und sein Herz begann zu rasen, man hatte ihn erwischt. Als nach 5 Minuten jedoch kein weiteres Geräusch folgte zuckte er mit den Achseln, vielleicht war es auch nur ein Tier gewesen. Eine leichtsinnige Maus vielleicht, die sich nicht vor den Eulen fürchtete. Das redete er sich so lange ein, bis etwas Hartes gegen seinen Rücken stieß - und fiel. Mitten auf ihn drauf. Er sackte unter dem Gewicht, jedoch verbiss er sich einen Fluch und rappelte sich wie ein aufgescheuchtes Tier auf. “Wer ist da?”, fragte er laut und bemühte sich um eine ruhige Stimme. Instinkiv zog er den Koffer an seine Brust, bereit seine geliebten Wesen zu verteidigen. “Lumos.”, murmelte er und blickte gespannt auf die Gestalt hinab, die sich dort am Waldboden befand.

AdA: Kapitel 40: Zu Gast

Newt kam stolpernd auf glattem Marmorfußboden auf und wie von selbst tastete er nach dem Zauberstab in seiner Manteltasche – aber er trug lediglich ein Hemd und sein Zauberstab lag in seinem Badezimmer auf dem Rand des Waschbeckens. Mit wachsender Panik blickte er auf und hatte kaum Zeit, seine Umgebung – einen weitläufigen, mit weißem Marmor ausgekleideten Saal – wahrzunehmen, weil sein Blick auf eine ihm nur zu bekannte Gestalt fiel. „Abernathy!“, japste er. Ihm gefror das Blut in den Adern, als ihm klar wurde, was das bedeuten musste. Newt warf einen hastigen Blick über die Schulter auf der Suche nach einem Fluchtweg, aber Abernathy zwang ihn mit einer einzigen Bewegung seines Zauberstabs auf die Knie und fesselte die Hände hinter seinem Rücken. Newt hatte, unbewaffnet und desorientiert wie er war, keine Chance zu entkommen.

AdA: Kapitel 36: Ein berühmter Autor

Im Nachhinein betrachtet, hatte Newts Aufenthalt in Askaban auch sein Gutes gehabt. Das ambivalente Bild, das die Medien von Newt den ganzen Spätherbst hindurch gezeichnet hatten, hatte Mr. Worme dazu bewegt, die vorweihnachtlichen Signierstunden sicherheitshalber abzusagen. Die Verkaufszahlen seien dennoch erfreulich gewesen, wie er Newt euphorisch mitgeteilt hatte – aber es sei an der Zeit, Newts Auftreten in der Öffentlichkeit vorsichtig wieder neu anzugehen. Es bestand schließlich die Chance, dass die Londoner Zauberergemeinschaft über die Feiertage vergessen hatte, dass der Autor ihrer neuen Lieblingslektüre möglicherweise eine zwielichtige Gestalt war. Oder aber sie hatte es nicht vergessen, aber den Schrecken überwunden, und waren jetzt umso neugieriger. Unglücklicherweise hatte sich letzteres als wahr herausgestellt.

AdA: Kapitel 24: Scherben

Tina hatte sich geschworen, nicht zu weinen – aber es war aussichtslos. Der Freitag war in Ordnung gewesen, wenn auch völlig erschöpfend. Sie war im MACUSA von einer Konferenz zur nächsten gehetzt, hatte bei Piquery persönlich vorgesprochen und Graves hatte darauf bestanden, dass sie zusammen zu Mittag aßen. Tina hatte kaum einen Bissen herunterbekommen vor Anspannung. Der Gedanke an all die Arbeit, die vor ihr lag, hatte ihr den Magen zugeschnürt, und Graves‘ prüfender Blick hatte sie beständig daran erinnert, dass Grindelwald sie und Newt in seiner Gestalt zum Tode verurteilt hatte. Sie hatte bis spät in die Nacht in ihrem alten Büro gesessen, über Akten gebrütet und versucht, alles, was ihr in London helfen konnte, mit einem Kopierzauber abzuschreiben oder im Gedächtnis zu behalten. Wegen der Zeitverschiebung hatte sie sich gefühlt, als hätte sie die ganze Nacht durchgearbeitet, als sie schließlich um ein Uhr morgens zu ihrer Wohnung zurückgekehrt war. Sie war die Treppen hinaufgeschlichen und hatte kein Licht gemacht, sondern hatte sich im Dunkeln und ohne sich umzuziehen, auf die Couch fallen lassen. Lediglich die Schuhe hatte sie abgestreift. Ihre vollkommene Erschöpfung hatte es ihr erlaubt, direkt in einen leichten Schlaf voll beunruhigender Träume zu fallen.
